Optical fiber composite overhead ground wire (OPGW) is a ground wire that integrates communication optical cable and overhead power transmission line lightning arrester. It must meet the technical requirements of optical fiber communication and the necessary characteristics of a ground wire, including mechanical strength and electrical performance. Since this ground wire is built with optical fiber in the stranded wire and installed on the top frame of the ground wire of the high-voltage overhead power transmission line, it has the advantages of safety, reliability, no electromagnetic induction, and maintenance-free.
Therefore, it has been gradually applied in overhead power transmission lines abroad since the late 1970s, and the usage is increasing. According to incomplete statistics, OPGW optical cables have been laid for more than 100,000 kilometers worldwide. In my country, the usage of OPGW optical cables has also been increasing since the 1990s, and more than 10,000 kilometers of lines are currently in operation.
OPGW optical cable engineering involves two disciplines: lines and communications. Each has different focuses and perspectives in their work, so it is necessary to discuss some principles in the bidding and design process.
At the same time, since the structures of OPGW optical cables produced by various manufacturers are quite different and the standards adopted are inconsistent, it is necessary to fully understand the characteristics of OPGW optical cables of various structures in engineering bidding so as to select appropriate products.
